I believe deeply in the value of homeownership. It’s part of the American Dream and I know firsthand how hard that dream can feel to reach, especially in the Bay Area.

When I was told I couldn’t afford to buy a home, I didn’t give up. I sold my Subaru, got a roommate, and committed to saving for a down payment, even if it meant starting somewhere else. That “somewhere else” was Miami. I bought a condo, held it for a year and sold it for double what I paid. That single, scrappy transaction made it possible for me to buy my first home in San Francisco, a 500-square-foot cottage at Ocean Beach.

Owning a home in the Bay Area doesn’t have to remain a dream. Will it look like the house you grew up in? Probably not. Will friends and family gasp and say, “That’s a ridiculous price for a house”? Almost certainly. But if you want a piece of the pie, it is possible. I know, because I’ve done it. And I love helping others realize that dream, too.
